cardinals, college of

   The college of cardinals has collective responsibility for the governance of the Church. Cardinals serve as advisers to the Pope, both individually and as a college during meetings or consistories concerned with Church-related issues. Members of the college of cardinals convene in a conclave on the death of the Pope to elect a new pope.
